Coloring a PDF design in Procreate
After importing your PDF into Procreate you’ll see all of the available pages in a row at the bottom of the screen (known as ‘Page Assist’) and also as layers in the layers palette.
Method one (with Page Assist on)
This method keeps all the designs in one file.
Choose a page to color by swiping horizontally through the available pages at the bottom of the screen (or select the layer in the layers window).
Create a grouped layer underneath the design to keep your coloring separate from the original design with these steps:
- Press the ‘+’ symbol at the top of the layers palette to create a new layer. This will be the layer you actually color on.
- Hold and drag this new layer underneath the design page
- Tap the design page layer to select it
- Swipe the new blank layer (now underneath) to the right. This will select both layers.
- Choose ‘Group’ from the top of the layers window.
- Tap ‘N’ on the design layer, and scroll to the top to select ‘Multiply’.
- Finally, tap the new blank layer to work on.
Now you can color freely without going over the lines.
Method two (alternative smaller file method)
If you only want to color one design, you can turn off page assist and delete all the other layers.
Select the spanner/wrench icon in the top left of the screen, then under ‘Canvas’ toggle off the ‘Page Assist’ option.
If you want to delete all the other page layers, in the layers window select the first that you don’t need, then swipe right to select each additional layer. Then select ‘Delete’ at the top of the window.
Now you’ll be left with just the one design to color.
Follow these steps to work on a new layer that won’t affect the lines:
- Press the ‘+’ symbol at the top of the layers palette to create a new layer
- Hold and drag this new layer underneath the design page
- Tap ‘N’ on the design layer, and scroll to the top to select ‘Multiply’
- Tap the new blank layer to work on.
You’re good to go without worrying about going over the lines.
